Agree with VR above, Seminyak would be the better option. There are plenty of places to stay that are within walking distance of shopping and great restaurants but still quiet. We stayed at Mutiara Bali Boutique Resort and Villa and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Ubud is lovely, it’s great for seeing rice paddies, temples and if you’re up for renting a scooter there are lots of beautiful waterfalls and treks nearby. It has lots of markets, nice shops and is generally pretty busy. Still great food here, but wouldn’t say it’s on the same level as Canggu or even Seminyak.
